Rs 7,395 crore to strengthen villages: panchayat scheme gets five more years
The scheme continues till 2030-31 and aims to reach over 2.55 lakh panchayat institutions.
The Union Cabinet approved continuing a rural development scheme, reported as the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Gram Atmanirbhar Yojana, from 2026-27 to 2030-31. This matches the term of the Sixteenth Finance Commission.
The total outlay is Rs 7,395.55 crore. Of this, the Centre gives Rs 4,869.48 crore and the states give Rs 2,526.07 crore. The scheme is meant to help villages plan work based on their own needs and resources.
It is expected to reach over 2.55 lakh panchayat institutions and about 32 lakh elected representatives, panchayat staff and others.
Why it matters
Villages work best when local people decide what the village needs, such as roads, water or schools. This scheme backs that idea by supporting panchayats and their elected members to plan and do their work well.
