Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana

A high-interest savings account for a girl child's education and marriage

Sukanya Samriddhi is a government-backed small savings account for a girl child, opened by a parent or guardian before she turns ten, at a post office or an authorised bank. The account earns a government-set interest rate, which is reviewed every quarter and is usually higher than ordinary savings. There is a minimum yearly deposit and a ceiling of Rs 1.5 lakh a year, and deposits are made for 15 years. Part of the balance can be withdrawn for education after the girl turns 18. Check the current rate and rules at the post office.
